How to avoid online fraud

Last Updated: October 22, 2026

Most people you meet on Maagal are who they say they are. A few are not. This page is about those few: how romance and money scams work, how to recognise one early, and what to do if it has already happened to you.

1. Never send money

Never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or bank details to anyone you met on Maagal, however long you have been talking and whatever the reason. Nobody genuine needs your money in order to meet you.

2. How it usually goes

A romance scam is a relationship built in order to ask for money. The people who run them are patient, often keep going for weeks, and are practised.

The pattern is consistent. Affection arrives quickly and intensely. There is always a reason never to meet or to appear on video — working offshore, deployed overseas, travelling for a contract. There is pressure to move off the app early. Then there is an emergency, an opportunity, or a customs fee, and the amount is one you can manage. If you pay, there will be another.

A newer variant skips the romance and sells an investment, usually in cryptocurrency, often through a site or app that shows your balance growing. Withdrawals fail, or require a fee. The site is theirs.

3. Warning signs

4. If you have already sent money

Nothing about having been targeted is embarrassing. These are organised operations, and they succeed because they are good at it.

5. Where to report fraud

Israel — Police: 100, or a complaint on the Israel Police website. Online fraud and phishing: the National Cyber Directorate, 119.

United States — reportfraud.ftc.gov, and the FBI at ic3.gov.

Canada — Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: 1-888-495-8501, weekdays (antifraudcentre.ca).

Australia — scamwatch.gov.au.

If your country is not listed, your local police come first, and we will help you find the right place if you write to us.

6. If we sent you a safety notice

If you received a safety notice from Maagal about an account you talked to, you do not need to do anything else unless you sent that account money or personal details. If you did, follow section 4. Questions about the notice: support@maagal.love.
